GreenLaw Honors Jewell Harper

GreenLaw, a nonprofit providing free, high-quality legal and technical assistance to environmental and community organizations throughout Georgia, will honor Jewell Harper with the Odgen Doremus Award for Excellence in Environmental Law for her critical legal work to protect Georgia’s natural environment.

GreenLaw Honors Jewell Harper With Odgen Doremus Award

For the last 19 years Harper has championed environmental legal and reporting issues throughout the Southeastern United States. Starting in EPA’s District 4 as an associate regional counsel and working her way through the ranks up to deputy assistant regional administrator, Harper has consistently defended environmental issues, making great strides in pollution prevention and expanding environmental sustainability in curriculum.

“It is the dedication of Jewell and other attorneys like her that help us defend Georgia’s most precious natural places,” said Stephanie Stuckey-Benfield, GreenLaw’s executive director. 
This award is part of an annual celebration, which honors citizens whose efforts have helped protect Georgia’s natural resources. Other honorees include Dave and Mindy Egan with the Initiative to Protect Jekyll Island, Marcia Bansley formerly of Trees Atlanta, Sen. Jason Carter, Sen. William Ligon, Rep. Alex Atwood and Rep. Jeff Chapman.
The Environmental Heroes Celebration will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 6-8 pm on the rooftop terrace of Nelson, Mullins, Riley and Scarborough in Midtown, Atlanta.   
Odgen Doremus was a hero to the Georgia environmental community. Doremus founded the organization that is now GreenLaw, was instrumental in legislation resulting in the Marshland Protection Act and served as executive committee member of the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club, among may other accomplishments.
GreenLaw is dedicated to preventing air and water pollution that endangers human health and degrades Georgia’s natural resources. Since 1992, GreenLaw has achieved these goals by providing free, high-quality legal and technical assistance to environmental organizations and community groups throughout Georgia.
