GreenLaw Encourages Concerned Citizens to Attend EPD’s Public Hearing Next Week
DeKalb County residents to voice concern about a proposed biomass facility that will emit harmful air pollutants

December 11, 2012 (ATLANTA)GreenLaw, a nonprofit providing free high-quality legal and technical assistance to environmental organizations and community groups throughout Georgia, is encouraging  DeKalb County and other metro Atlanta residents to attend next week’s Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) public hearing regarding Green Energy Partner’s proposed biomass facility.

WHO: Green Energy Partners, an affiliate of PDA Design Services, Inc., has proposed a biomass facility to be located on Rogers Lake Road in Lithonia – less than two miles from Princeton Elementary School.  The company says the facility will sit on 21 acres, burn 160,000 tons of wood each year and produce clean energy, but experts predict the plant will actually deteriorate DeKalb County’s air quality by releasing harmful air pollutants.

WHAT: Lithonia has notoriously polluted air and fails to meet EPA health standards.  Green Energy Partners’ proposed plant will produce harmful air pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde.  The facility will also require about 7,500 tractor-trailer truckloads of wood chip fuel per year, generating unnecessary diesel emissions.

Citizens will share their concerns as they relate to public health and environmental justice at a hearing convened by the Georgia EPD.
